Consultant takes to seas on a mission of mercy

A BRISTOL doctor has set sail on a ship providing free medical care and humanitarian aid to the people of Togo.

Michelle White, pictured, a consultant in anaesthesia and paediatric intensive care, has joined hundreds of volunteers on the world's largest hospital ship, the Africa Mercy.

The 41-year-old who worked at Bristol Children's Hospital from 2007 until this year is volunteering on the ship for the next two to three years.

The ship, run by the charity Mercy Ships is staffed by more than 450 volunteers from 40 nations and is currently docked in Togo for five months.

Dr White, of Clifton, is offering her skills and time as part of the operating team on board Africa Mercy, which provides corrective and reconstructive surgery to people suffering from problems such as enormous facial and neck tumours, cleft lip and palate surgeries.

She has volunteered for Mercy Ships five times before and has provided medical care in Liberia, Benin, Togo, and Sierra Leone.

"I volunteer with Mercy Ships because they have an excellent track record in delivering humanitarian aid and health care in the developing world," said Dr White.

"Mercy Ships brings hope and healing to some of the poorest people in the world. Without some of the healthcare treatments that are offered, many of the patients have no hope. Mercy Ships focuses on not only the physical recovery but on the emotional and spiritual healing too.

"It is seeing hope and joy return to those who have lost them and that makes volunteering with Mercy Ships extremely worthwhile."
